Island driving in Lanzarote
The laws for driving in Lanzarote are the same as with all Spanish driving laws. The official national speed limit at 120 Km/h on motorways
and 50 Km/h in built-up areas. You will need a full valid driving licence, credit card and passport id too. You will need to keep your
driving licence with you at all times of driving as well as the rental documents and ID.
Driving is on the right side of the road so don't forget, if you are going to overtake someone to do it on the left and give way to traffic
to the left at roundabout (totally opposite to the UK).
Moped and Motorbike users should wear crash helmets at all times. Talking on your mobile phone whilst driving your car may also get you into
deep trouble with the local police as will throwing anything out of your car window i.e. litter. Seat belts are compulsory, drinking and
driving or under the influence of drugs is also illegal with random breath test carried out on motorists and on the spot fines given to
non-residents.
Parking is not allowed on Yellow or White lines, with blue lines indicating a restricted zone where you may have to purchase a pay and
display ticket (usually in the busier areas).
Be careful driving and keep your distance from the vehicle in front as some driver tend not to indicate when turning.
Whatever you do don't park in front of dustbins as collections can be made at any time of day or night and if you are obstructing them you
will we towed away.
Always make sure you are fully insured and that your car hire company provides 24hr assistance incase of emergency. Don't forget to ask them
for a road map if you do not have one yourself.
